Jim Carrey plays a man by the name of Stanley Ipkiss who is a bank clerk who is a pushover and is in love with a lounge singer (Cameron Diaz). “Stanley Ipkiss is a bank clerk that is an incredibly nice man. Unfortunately, he is too nice for his own good and is a pushover when it comes to confrontations. After one of the worst days of his life, he finds a mask that depicts Loki, the Norse night god of mischief. Now, when he puts it on, he becomes his inner, self: a cartoony romantic wild man. However, a small time crime boss, Dorian Tyrel, comes across this character dubbed "The Mask" by the media. After Ipkiss's alter ego indirectly kills his friend in crime, Tyrel now wants this green-faced goon destroyed,” http://imdb.com/title/tt0110475/).

While watching this movie the special effects made the movie good and funny. For example after Stanley finds the mask in the ocean and brings it back to his apartment, he debates about whether or not he should put it on. When he finally does there is smoke and he begins to spin in a tornado. Every time he puts on the mask the same thing happens. When the villain Dorian (Peter Greene) gets a hold of the mask and puts in on they show cloud and thunder to show the evil of him.

The special effects were developed mostly by Christopher Gilman Global Effects Inc. who had the prop masks, Cinelease who had additional production equipment provided, Columbia Records soundtrack published and EFX Systems digital sound and re-recording

The effects of this movie were much better than in the movie called Ace Ventura: Pet Detective which Jim Carrey also stars in. This movie really didn’t have any special effects since Ace Ventura: Pet Detective he man role is to find a stolen dolphin mascot of a football team. The effects of The Mask and another movie called The Number 23 were both good. In this movie Jim Carrey character is going nuts because he realizes that everything adds up to be the number 23. The special effects are shown by scene after another screen is flashbacks.

Three Facts that I learned:

The first fact I learned is how blue screens work. “This technique allows actors and scale models to find themselves in totally imaginary situations,” (http://www.howstuffworks.com/blue-screen.htm). This technique is used so often.

The second fact I learned is what morphing is. “Morphing is the process of transforming one image into another. Here you'll find information about morphing, Macintosh and PC software programs for creating morph animations and movies, plus examples and galleries of morph transformations and distortions,” (http://graphicssoft.about.com).

The third fact I learned is what fizt is. To be honest I have never heard of fizt before. “Fizt is an animation program that can speed up the production of special effects in some cases by a factor of more than 150 to 1 -- and can also make the effects appear more life-like than has been possible with less sophisticated programs,” (http://whatis.techtarget.com).

Investigation into Urban Legends

Urban legends are stories that are false but have recent events in them. According to American Heritage Dictionary urban legends An apocryphal story involving incidents of the recent past, often including elements of humor and horror, that spreads quickly and is popularly believed to be true,” (education.yahoo.com).

The first legend that I never heard of and that some people might fall for is about a shark leaping out and attacking a helicopter “National Geographic's Web site was deluged with hundreds of queries a day when an e-mail containing a photo of a shark leaping out of the water to attack a helicopter,” (http://news.nationalgeographic.com). People will believe this because of where they are finding this.

The second urban legend that I never heard of and that some people might fall for is The Pregnant Man. People might believe this is because this person was born a female.

“Mr. Beatie -- formerly Ms. Lagondino -- is a transgender person, born female, who had his outward features medically altered to achieve a more masculine appearance but kept his reproductive organs intact. He claims he became pregnant five months ago via artificial insemination,” (http://urbanlegends.about.com). Some people might not believe it because he had a sex operation to become a man.

The second urban legend that I never heard of and that some people might fall for is Chinese hacker riot. “The FBI's National Infrastructure Protection Center (FBI NIPC) issued an alert about "increased Internet attacks against U.S. web sites and mail servers possible in early May." The agency based its warning on a recent international incident between U.S. and Chinese military aircraft. The U.S. military forwarded the cyber-alert to its units stationed around the globe,” (http://vmyths.com/hmul/6/14/). People might believe this because of computer threats and when people are alerted about computer viruses or threat they get concerned.

To be honest most of the urban legends that are mentioned I haven’t heard of but there is one that I thought of while reading them. Now this might be one that most people know called “Bloody Mary.” The legend is that if you say her name three times in the mirror she will come out and attack you.

The reason that the Web is so prone to these types of “stories” is that everyone reads something on the Internet no matter where it is and what it is.

IANA & the Top Level Domain Report

The first thing that I learned about IANA is what IANA really is. “The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is the body responsible for coordinating some of the key elements that keep the Internet running smoothly. Whilst the Internet is renowned for being a worldwide network free from central coordination, there is a technical need for some key parts of the Internet to be globally coordinated – and this coordination role is undertaken by IANA,” (http://www.iana.org/about/). To be completely honest I haven’t heard of IANA. So I was surprise to hear of this.

The second thing that I learned about IANA is that IANA is responsible for DNS root zone which means assigning top level domains. Two examples are .UK and .COM.

The third thing that I learned about IANA is what there policy is. IANA uses a policy which is provided by ICANN which is a development of domain and name operations. “Using the policy setting forums provided by ICANN, policy development for domain name operations and IP addressing is arrived at by many different stakeholders. ICANN has a structure of supporting organizations that contribute to deciding how ICANN runs, and in turn how IANA develops,” (http://www.iana.org/about/)

When I went on godaddy.com and I search for richardunger.com it wasn’t available. So I decided to search richardiunger.com and that was available. I added the I since it is my middle name.

The idea I decided to search for was about the future of print journalism. The domain printjournalismfuture.com is available I first tried printjorunalism.com and that was not available. So I then tried futureofjournalism.com was not available. Many of you know that I am the Editor-in-Chief of The Scribe and I have seen some members of The Scribe using Photoshop. I want to learn is how to use the many different aspects of Photoshop.

Available Tutorials:

The first tutorial that I that I found was how to use Photoshop. This link showed what advantage it is to use Photoshop. The best way to learn about Photoshop is to take a class on it but there is also a help box with-in the program.

http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/ps.htm

The next tutorial I found was how to install Photoshop. It is important to know how to install it before you can even use Photoshop.

http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/pselements/qt/freegoodies.htm

The third tutorial that was helpful was how to use a crop tool. A crop tool is to cut out an area of any image just by selecting the area that you want to keep.

http://graphicdesign.about.com/od/howto/ss/photoshop_crop.htm

Evaluation:

My experience with using these tutorials gave me an idea of how to use Photoshop. I hope that next time Photoshop needs to be done for The Scribe I can do it. If I need to install it then I also know how to install it.

Before today I have not use a tutorial. Yes that is weird but I usually try to learn how to use something on my own.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/2229939/Midterm-Project-AdidasScribd is very interesting to use. Internet addiction results in personal, family, academic, financial and occupational problems that are characteristic of other addictions,” (http://www.addictionrecov.org/intwhat.htm).

Ways to become addicted:

Many people might believe that the only way for a person to become addicted is for them to consume something. When it comes to Internet Addiction is ingested mostly by emotional and physical problems. Some ways of becoming addicted to the Internet are gambling, pornography (cybersex and virtual sex offenders) and cyber disorders.

Kinds of addictions:

One kind of Internet Addiction is gambling. This type of addiction can affect the public health. One example of gambling is sports gambling. Sports gambling is very addictive since people might win and then think they can always win and they keep betting.

Another kind of Internet Addiction is pornography. An example of this type of addiction would be sex offences against children. This is a major issue of an offence on the Internet today. There are two types of sexual crimes on the Internet. The first type is Pedophilia which is sexual activity with a child who is 13 years old or younger. The second type is Paraphilia which is intense sexual fantasies or behaviors that usually involves objects, or one or more partners. “Sexual offenses against children constitute a significant proportion of all reported criminal sex acts. Rather than playgrounds and schoolyards, cyberspace now provides an easy breeding ground for child sex offenders to engage and meet children. Pedophilia and paraphilia are the most common classifications with respect to sex crimes involving the Internet. Pedophilia involves sexual activity with a prepubescent child (generally age 13 year or younger). Pedophiles online demonstrate a past history of sexual conduct with children and transfer this sexual interest to cyberspace, this generally involves producing illegal images to trade online (i.e., child pornography) or making contact directly with children through chat rooms. Paraphilia involves recurrent, intense sexually arousing fantasies, sexual urges, or behaviors generally involving 1)nonhum an objects, 2) the suffering or humiliation of oneself or one‟s partner, or 3) children or other non-consenting persons that occur over a period of at least 6 months,” (Young, 1).

One article that shows social networking is on BBC News website. It was investigated that women are more likely to be one’s to be addicted. “People who are addicted to the Internet are more likely to be thirty-something women than the stereotyped shy, male teenagers, according to new research. A study of 445 Internet users by the University of Hertfordshire found that women were equally likely to define themselves as addicts as men. Most addicts were around 30 years old. Some 40 million people in the USA are estimated to be regular users of the Internet, compared with around seven million in the UK,” (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/235466.stm).

Internet and Socially Connecting Medium:

The Internet is a socially connect medium since the Internet is “an interconnected system of networks that connects computers around the world via the TCP/IP protocol.” (education.yahoo.com/). Since the Internet is connected through the world it is very easy for people to get addicted to things on the Internet. The Internet has email, chat, websites, games, pornography and anything else can think of. All of these things can cause a person to get addicted.

Survey and studies:

One survey that was done was by Dr. M. Rauterberg, who wanted to prove how addictive the Internet really is. Dr. Rauterberg wanted to prove how addictive the internet is. “A questionnaire was put on the WWW to examine Internet behavior and addiction aspects. 450 valid responses were analyzed. The most part of the responses came from Switzerland. Shaffer, who want to show how fast the Internet grew and how fast it became very addictive for people to use. “The UCLA Internet Report is one of few studies of randomly selected community samples available to illuminate the epidemiology of computer or Internet usage patterns. “The Internet has become the fastest growing electronic technology in world history. In the United States, for example, after electricity became publicly available, 46 years passed before 30 percent of American homes were wired; 38 years passed before the telephone reached 30 percent of U.S. households, and 17 years for television. The Internet required only seven years to reach 30 percent of American households” Cole et al. found that among Internet users, the following activities were the most common,” Shaffer,4)

A third survey that was done was by Kimberly Young. While she used IAT which screens Internet Addiction she had people schedule appointments and they would investigate the behavior of them how Internet Addiction affected them. “Once an appointment had been scheduled, sessions were conducted between the client and the principle investigator. Initial sessions gathered familial background, the nature of the presenting problem, its onset, and severity. Cognitive-behavioral interventions were utilized to address presenting symptoms related to computer use, specifically abstinence from problematic online applications and strategies to control online use,” (Young, 4).

A fourth survey that was done was Richard A. Labrie who research how much gambling is related to Internet Addiction. “Data include recorded fixed-odds bets on the outcome of sporting contests and live-action bets on the outcome of events within contests for 40,499 Internet sports gambling service subscribers who enrolled during February 2005. We tracked the following primary gambling behaviors: daily totals of the number of bets made, money bet, and money won. We transformed these variables into measures of gambling involvement. We analyzed behavior for both fixed-odds and live-action bets. The median betting behavior of the 39,719 fixed-odds bettors was to place 2.5 bets of €4 (approximately $5.3 US), every fourth day during the median 4 months from first to last bet. This typical pattern incurred a loss of 29% of the amount wagered. The median betting behavior of the 24,794 live-action bettors was to place 2.8 wagers of €4 every fourth day during the median duration of 6 weeks at a loss of 18% of the amount wagered. We also examined the behavior of empirically determined groups of heavily involved bettors whose activity exceeded that of 99% of the sample,” (Labrie, 1).

Treatment for Internet Addiction:

One treatment that is available was done by Kimberly Young. The treatment consisted of people using IAT which screened Internet Addiction. “The Center for Online Addiction was established in 1995, and its website at www.netaddiction.com provides education, support, and treatment to people concerned about Internet addiction. Clients can seek treatment through traditional outpatient services utilizing individual or family counseling services. Individual adult clients requesting treatment were screened for Internet addiction using the IAT. Those classified for inclusion in the study completed an intake counseling form administered during the initial session that evaluated information related to compulsive use of the Internet as part of this study,” (Young, 4).

This website (www.netaddiction.com) is a way of addiction to be treated. It is a organization that helps treat and prevent Internet addiction. “The Center for Online Addiction offers hope and valuable resources to those seeking information about Internet addiction. Internet addiction is a type of compulsive disorder and as an organization, we are specifically dedicated to helping people who suffer from this new form of addictive behavior,” (www.netaddiction.com)

Another thing that is on the website is to quiz Internet Addiction that has to do with cybersex. As you can see below on the handout there is a ten question quiz for a person to see whether or not if they are addicted to the Internet by cybersex. “ If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, you may be addicted to cybersex. With the availability of adult sites and sex chat rooms, more and more people like yourself have come to realize their initial curiosity has turned into an addiction,” (www.netaddiction.com).

Ways of knowing that you are Addicted:

There are eight different ways for a person to figure out whether or not they are addicted to the Internet. The first way is if the person remember their previous encounter with the Internet or they cant wait for their next experience. The second way is by using the Internet many different times of the day to get some sort of satisfaction out of it. Next is always being unsuccessful of cutting back from the Internet. It is always easier to say it instead of doing it. Another way is always feeling restless and being in an angry and in a depressed mood. You are always on the Internet longer then you say you will. Another way that you are addicted is if you lose you job, lose or change in your relationship with friends, girlfriend, boyfriend, or family which can lead into lying. Finally if you just use the Internet for escaping your real life problems.

Internet and Our Culture:

The Internet in our culture can affect our mental health which can affect their personal life. “The internet is typically discussed as if it were a set of activities when it is actually a medium upon which various activities can occur. It is, therefore, neither "good" nor "bad" for mental health, although specific activities may have an influence. The standard of mental health information on the internet is probably equivalent to the mainstream media, although overall it still remains poor. The concept of "internet addiction" looks increasingly invalid, although it is likely that depressed or isolated individuals are more likely to focus on certain activities to excess. A number of "extreme communities" have formed online, such as pro-anorexia, pro-suicide, pro-amputation and likely-psychotic groups,” (Vaughan, 1)

Mesmerizing Effect of Internet:

The Internet will always be around no matter what happens. As no technology comes around the Internet and the addiction will be there as well. The children will be influence since how big the medium of Internet is.

Questions

1. Wow this article had a major impact on me. The main reason was that I didn’t even know that this massive environmental crisis was going on.

One thing that I struggled in my opinion was the thing archaeologists called e-waste. “Future archaeologists will note that at the tail end of the 20th century, a new, noxious kind of clutter exploded across the landscape: the digital detritus that has come to be called e-waste,” (ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/01/high-tech-trash/carroll-text/2).

The second thing that I struggled in my opinion was “A switchover to digital high-definition television broadcasts is scheduled to be complete by 2009, rendering inoperable TVs that function perfectly today but receive only an analog signal. As viewers prepare for the switch, about 25 million TVs are taken out of service yearly,” (ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/01/high-tech-trash/carroll-text/2). I didn’t know that TV is taken out of repair each year.

The third thing that struggled in my opinion “Currently, less than 20 percent of e-waste entering the solid waste stream is channeled through companies that advertise themselves as recyclers, though the number is likely to rise as states like California crack down on landfill dumping,” (ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/01/high-tech-trash/carroll-text/3). The reason that this struggled with me is why are companies that advertise that they recycle and they don’t recycle.

The proactive steps that I might take to help with this major problem are making sure I recycle. If a lot of people do what they have to in order to recycle. It is very important for everyone to recycle no matter what the product is.

The thing that I took away from the link called Field Notes: Essick was the fact that he went around to different countries to study the e-waste. Also the fact of the United States doesn’t make money through High-tech recycling.

My Freeware Experience

When reading the article by Si Chen I learned a lot from reading the article. First I didn’t know what shareware is. He states “Shareware is a different concept. You can download and try shareware for free, but if you use it, you are supposed to pay for it. It is developed and released by someone who keeps full control of the intellectual property. The user does not have access to the source code and cannot modify it. There is also no collaboration or community around shareware,” (opensourcestrategies.blogspot.com).

At first I was asking myself what was open source really means. After reading the article I learned that open source is open for all users which is free and has a modify way to distribute source codes.

I decided to visit Tucows and Download.com. The experience with these two website was different. I didn’t expect to see what I saw on these two websites. When I went Tucows the first thing I saw was for spyware which I didn’t expect to see. Then on Download.com the first thing I saw was Mozilla Thunderbird.

When it came down to install anything I didn’t. The main reason is I have been having a lot of problems with my computer and I was afraid if I ended up installing anything on my computer it might crash. I wish I was able to install something from these websites to see what it looked like.

Before these assignment I didn’t know anything about these websites. I believes that all of these websites are good for every person to use on their computers.

Inside My Computer

Intel Pentium III processor

498 MHZ and 320 MB of RAM

The Intel Pentium III processor is similar to Pentium II. This means instead of having a desktop or a laptop machine, we will have the technology implanted in the environment around us. When it came to what Riley said about “is it responsible to ignore or minimize the potential for misuse of a technology simply to realize its benefits?” I believe that he is right. By misusing the technology you realize the benefits of having it. If someone doesn’t have it then they won’t know how much people need technology.

In Mark Weiser article he speaks about how technology changes or even disappears. For example he is says “Such a disappearance is a fundamental consequence not of technology, but of human psychology. Whenever people learn something sufficiently well, they cease to be aware of it.” I believe that what he foresees for the future with the technology changing will come true but some technologies won’t disappear.

The article in the BBC Bill Gates said, “In particular, he said, touch, vision and speech interfaces would become increasingly important?” I feel that he might be right because of ubiquitous computing and technology changing.

When it comes down to it ubiquitous computing is going to be around for a while. I came to the University of Bridgeport in 2004. When I came here I decided that I wanted to study Mass Communication with a concentration in Journalism. For that last two years I have been on The Scribe. Last semester I was chosen to be the Editor-in-Chief of it. When I graduate from this school I want to work for a local newspaper back in New York.
